meanings, we use context to select the meaning intended by the speaker. But context is involved at an even earlier level in speech perception because it allows us to recognize sounds as words. We perceive spoken words as a sequence of vowel and consonant sounds, that is, as a sequence of phonemes. Perceptually, each phoneme seems fixed, but acoustically, a phoneme can vary considerably depending on context. We hear the same /d/ sound in die and due, but the initial auditory signal of these words is different. This difference arises because of the flowing nature of speech production. As we articulate one phoneme, we are preparing to articulate the next, and the resulting co-articulation is reflected in the acoustical signal. The processes that underlie speech perception use contextual information to automatically and effortlessly compensate for the effect of co-articulation, resulting in a phonemic constancy similar to the lightness constancy described earlier. In some situations, such as a noisy party or a crowded restaurant, the acoustical signal may be insufficient for reliable speech recognition. In these situations, we may rely heavily on lipreading to understand what is being said. But even when the speech signal is clear and we are not consciously paying attention to the speaker’s mouth, visual context can influence phoneme perception. This automatic processing of facial movements explains why a dubbed movie can be particularly difficult to understand: We cannot ignore the visual context even when it is misleading. Like the other aspects of perception described here, phoneme recognition is a topic of intensive research. Although this process is not completely understood, a full description will involve the integration of contextual information across time and across senses. Although it may seem paradoxical, we perceive phonemes as having stable properties that are independent of context precisely because we are so adept at interpreting them in context.

Effect of overlaid luminance contrast on perceived color contrast: Shadows enhance, borders suppress.

Natural scenes contain both color and luminance variations at different sizes and orientations that are sometimes spatially overlaid and sometimes not. Here, we explore visual interactions between overlaid color and luminance contrast that are both suprathreshold and highly visible. We used a color-luminance plaid in which the perception of the color contrast and luminance contrast components w...

A Quantitative Investigation on the Effect of Edge Enhancement for Improving Visual Acuity at Different Levels of Contrast

Background: The major limitation in human vision is refractive error. Auxiliary equipment and methods for these people are not always available. In addition, limited range of accommodation in adult people when switching from a far point to a near point is not simply possible. In this paper, we are looking for solutions to use the facilities of digital image processing and displaying to improve ...

A new approach to contrast enhancement in MAGICA gel dosimeter image with MRI technique

parameters that have to be measured in gel dosimetry. However, the resolution in gel is strongly dependant on gel composition. Selection of optimum method in dose response readout and proper values of parameters can result in noise reduction as well as improvement of contrast, and spatial resolution considerably. Materials and Methods: MAGICA polymer gel dosimeters were manufactured and irradia...

Density-Based Histogram Partitioning and Local Equalization for Contrast Enhancement of Images

Histogram Equalization technique is one of the basic methods in image contrast enhancement. Using this method, in the case of images with uniform gray levels (with narrow histogram), causes loss of image detail and the natural look of the image. To overcome this problem and to have a better image contrast enhancement, a new two-step method was proposed. In the first step, the image histogram is...

A General Framework for 1-D Histogram-baesd Image Contrast Enhancement

In this paper, a general framework for image contrast enhancement algorithm based on an optimization problem is presented. Through this optimization, the intensities can be better distributed. The algorithm is based on the facts that the histogram of the enhanced image is close to the input image histogram and uniform distribution, simultaneously. Based on this fact, we obtain a closed form opt...

Quantitative 3D Assessment of Myocardial Viability with MRI Delayed Contrast Enhancement

Myocardial viability is a fundamental question in the clinical and therapeutic decision making process. Contrast-enhanced MRI can distinguish between viable and necrotic myocardium in non-invasive manner and with excellent definition of endocardial and epicardial borders. Aim of this study is to propose a software methodology that allows to assess the global, transmural and intramural extent of...
